Hallett Cove Shopping Centre - 'Excellence in retail planning demanded & provided'

The $50 million expansion of the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre in Adelaide's southern suburbs was completed in June 2009 and was officially opened by The Honourable Mike Rann MP, Premier of South Australia on 28 September 2009. The centre is now anchored by Woolworths, Big W and Foodland with approximately 75 specialty shops.

A strong understanding of customers and their interactions with shopping environments is the hallmark of excellent retail design activities, these skills are on full display in the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre redevelopment project. Project services provided by Saunders Global include the architectural design, interior design, identity design environmental graphics and signage.

Hallett Cove has been developed as a regional centre with a strong emphasis on convenience shopping. The design process has not been without its difficulties. The site has areas of “active” water sensitive soil, and the location of the basement to avoid these areas was a significant problem. Provision of suitable temporary services capable of maintaining retail activities during the construction process had also been an issue.

The new centre is characterised by openness, natural light and modern ambience, with the redevelopment featuring an interior food court with a raised roof to allow natural light in and keep heat out. The retail area layout features wide arcades with key nodal points at intersections of pedestrian flow. The design displays environmental considerations, with the use of high-performance glazing in skylights and the main entry using a selection of materials with low VOC – paints, finishes and adhesives.
